St. Anton, Downhill Women 09.01.2021, favourites & betting odds – Alpine skiing

Goggia against Suter goes into the next round

In the previous two downhill races, the podium was withheld from the same three women. In St. Anton, however, several other candidates have already positioned themselves for a possible podium during training.

One can therefore assume that a really close battle for the top spots will develop on the Arlberg because some outsiders have smelled a fuse and of course want to get in the best possible shape with a view to the Alpine Ski World Cup, which starts in a month.

The bookmakers now rate two women as very hot candidates for victory, because if you look at the betting odds on the downhill run of the women in St. Anton, then there is no way around Corinne Suter and Sofia Goggia.

In training, however, other runners were ahead and so an outsider tip could pay off in a big way. The odds are very evenly distributed in the extended field, so in order to be able to make an exact forecast, you have to take a very close look at the form curve of the runners.

The favourites for the women’s downhill in St. Anton on January 9th, 2021

Sofia Goggia

🇮🇹 Sofia Goggia
Position in the Downhill World Cup: 1.

The Italian really got off to a dream start in Val d’Isere. She finished with a first and a second-place and now forms the leading duo in the Downhill World Cup together with Suter. Now it is, of course, necessary to confirm the performances shown at the beginning of the season.

Goggia has been involved in the World Cup for some time now, so the 28-year-old knows how to deal with the corresponding tension. In the 2017/18 season, she was able to win the Downhill World Cup. Will the second trick follow this season?

Experience is the greatest asset

In any case, the botched preseason should be completely forgotten for her and so she is now seamlessly building on her achievements shown in 2019 when she just barely missed winning the small crystal ball.

In any case, we have the winner of the last downhill run on the bill again in St. Anton. However, since the best betting providers rate her with the lowest odds, she does not necessarily suggest a tip.

Betting Tips: Ortlieb on the podium
Odds: 4.50

Corinne Suter

🇨🇭 Corinne Suter
Position in the Downhill World Cup: 1.

The Swiss is the most consistent driver in the field and must be seen in the closest circle of favourites in every downhill competition. Already in the first race of the season, she recorded a win and immediately followed suit with a second-place the day after.

Suter is the constancy in person

Last year’s winner of the discipline world cup has now finished first or second four races in a row and has been on the podium in eight of the last twelve races. Even if she didn’t seem quite firm in her first training session on Thursday, anything but a top position would be a disappointment.

From our point of view, bets on Suter are the obvious choice for the descent in St. Anton, because hardly any other lady has a similar level of security in the fastest skiing discipline. With odds of 3.75, a tip is still relatively worthwhile given your favourite position.

Lara Gut-Behrami

🇨🇭 Lara Gut-Behrami
Position in the Downhill World Cup: 9.

The former world-class driver has been struggling to get back on track for several seasons. In the preseason she achieved at least one unexpected highlight with a double victory in Crans Montana shortly before the end of the season. Apart from that, there has not been a downhill podium for over two years.

Back to old strength in St. Anton?

Her performance in the first training now gives a little hope that she might be at the front again after all. She set the fastest time on Thursday and now, of course, she would like to deliver a similar performance in the race.

Her shape curve seems too vague to us, however, so that we cannot make predictions on the Swiss woman for the downhill run of the ladies in St. Anton. With an eighth and an eleventh place, their start to the season wasn’t exactly promising either.

Breezy Johnson

🇺🇸 Breezy Johnson
Position in the Downhill World Cup: 3.

The American was the surprise of the downhill races so far, because with two third places the 24-year-old, who had never stood on a downhill podium before, was able to put herself in the limelight.

However, a closer look at their shape curve shows that the most recent successes have already emerged over a number of years. After some top placings in 2018, she was initially thrown back by an injury, now she is back stronger than ever.

Ready for the maiden win soon?

The young American has every chance to soon become one of the best downhill skiers in the world. In any case, the saying “the sky is the limit” fits here. We already see a tip on Johnson as a very interesting outsider option on the descent in St. Anton, especially since she was also able to convince in training.

Nina Ortlieb

🇦🇹 Nina Ortlieb
Position in the Downhill World Cup: 8.

The young Austrian fights her way quietly and secretly towards the top of the world. She has already won several stages in the past races and will soon be ready for the big stage.

In training, she already presented herself excellently, which is why a podium place is certainly feasible. In any case, we have a lot of confidence in the 24-year-old.

Alpine skiing for women in St. Anton – outsiders

Ester Ledecka is now a really great in the speed disciplines. She added one or two World Cup victories to her completely surprising Olympic victory in the Super-G in 2018. She could definitely attack the top positions again in St. Anton.

In the last descent, Lie, a young Norwegian, just barely missed the podium. She was also in excellent shape in training for the coming race and could cause a sensation.

Austrians show in training

Since Thursday training at the latest, one can have legitimate hopes for a home win in Austria, because in advance some runners presented themselves in excellent shape.

In addition to the fastest in training, Tamara Tippler, Christine Scheyer and Mirjam Puchner also showed extremely fast momentum. Here one or the other lady could attack the absolute top field, but ultimately a home win would come as a surprise given a strong competition.

Prediction & betting base trend – who will win the women’s downhill in St. Anton on January 9th, 2021?

If you believe the odds of the women’s downhill run in St. Anton, then only two women have a real chance of triumph. So is the duel between Suter and Goggia going into the next round or will other runners join the fight for victory in the third race of the season?

Sure, statistically, the two women with the lowest odds also have the best odds. In our opinion, Corinne Suter is the best option for a favourite tip, because no other runner is as consistent as she. She also has a reasonably profitable odds.

Key facts – Downhill skiing for women in St. Anton – Tips

In 2020/21, Suter and Goggia have made the first two places among themselves
Johnson has made two podiums this season
The Austrians were able to show collectively in training

Now there are also three excellent outsider options because Johnson, Ortlieb and Tippler were able to offer excellent performance in training and have good betting odds across the board. With a little racing luck, any of the women mentioned could be successful on Saturday.

If you look at the bare figures, then a tip on the American Johnson will probably be the most successful for the downhill run in St. Anton, because she has already been on the podium twice recently and delivered some good results at the end of the preseason.
