Biathlon Oberhof Women Sprint on January 14th, 2021: favourites, tips & odds

Tiril Eckhoff still in overform?

New week, new attempt for the German women at the home game in Oberhof. In the end, it was not going well for either the German women or the men. Accordingly, the two mixed seasons also fell short of their own hopes. On Thursday, the women will make another attempt in the sprint to be successful on the Rennsteig.

However, the performances of the last few weeks show that the German women are unlikely to be among the favourites on Thursday either. In the sprint, it looks like the Scandinavian women will fight for victory among themselves. This means that the Swede Hanna Öberg mainly has to deal with the Norwegians Marte Olsbu Roiseland and Tiril Eckhoff.

Tiril Eckhoff and Hanna Öberg have each won two sprints this winter. Surprisingly, the fifth victory of the season over the short distance went to Belarusian Dzinara Alimbekava, who did not start well into the new year. In the women’s sprint in Oberhof, the prediction tends towards a Scandinavian victory.

In the German camp, one hopes that Franziska Preuss or Denise Herrmann will finally break the knot, especially with a view to the World Cup in Pokljuka next month. In general, we would rather keep our hands off placing bets on one of the German women with the well-known bookmakers in the women’s sprint in Oberhof.

The favourites in the women’s sprint in Oberhof on January 14th, 2021

Marte Olsbu Roiseland

🇳🇴 Marte Olsbu Roiseland

Position in the Sprint World Cup 2020/21: 1.
Position in the overall World Cup 2020/21: 1.

It is impressive what the five-time Antholz world champion is once again demonstrating in Constance this season. Tiril Eckhoff, for example, has significantly more World Cup victories this winter, but Marte Olsbu Roiseland leads the overall World Cup. This is because, apart from the season opener (individual) in Kontiolahti, she never finished worse than seventh in the last ten races.

Roiseland still without a sprint win this winter

At least it was enough for the Norwegian to win two times. Marte Olsbu Roiseland triumphed in the pursuit in Hochfilzen and in the mass start in the second week of Hochfilzen. Last weekend it was enough to finish fifth in the sprint on the Rennsteig. In the pursuit that followed, the 30-year-old missed victory by a hair’s breadth and came in second.

Almost exactly a year ago, Marte Olsbu Roiseland won a sprint on the Rennsteig. A top placement seems almost certain for the Norwegian on Thursday. It is, therefore, conceivable to place tips on a victory for the 30-year-olds in the women’s sprint in Oberhof, so that she could expand her lead in the sprint world cup and in the overall standings.

Hanna Oberg

🇸🇪 Hanna Öberg

Position in the Sprint World Cup 2020/21: 2.
Position in the overall World Cup 2020/21: 3rd.

In the sprint, Hanna Öberg is a force this winter. Nevertheless, she is not immune from experiencing a used day over the 7.5 kilometres. In the first sprint in Hochfilzen, the Swede only finished 29th this winter. However, all other results can be seen over the short distance.

Hanna Öberg with two sprint successes in Kontiolahti

The Swede won the first two sprints of the winter in Kontiolahti with a perfect race. In addition, there is sixth place in the second sprint in Hochfilzen and two in the previous week in Oberhof. Given the strength of the Norwegians on the trail, Hanna Öberg will have to get through without a mistake to have a chance of victory.

Up to this point, Oberhof wasn’t Hanna Öberg’s path. In Thuringia, it has not yet been enough to win a World Cup. We also see the competition from the neighbouring country as a bit stronger at the moment. The podium is definitely there, but we tend not to allude to the odds of a win for Hanna Öberg in the Oberhof women’s sprint.

Tiril Eckhoff

🇳🇴 Tiril Eckhoff

Position in the Sprint World Cup 2020/21: 3rd.
Position in the overall World Cup 2020/21: 2.

This winter becomes more than clear once again that it is a big mistake to write off Tiril Eckhoff prematurely. The Norwegian struggled to really get into the season. In the meantime, the 30-year-old has fully made it to the World Cup and it is not an exaggeration to call her the athlete of the moment, because the last results have been great.

Eckhoff with five wins in the last eight races

Tiril Eckhoff has won five of the last eight races and also finished second twice. So she really got on her teammate Marte Olsbu Roiseland in the overall World Cup. In the current condition, the tested bookmakers see the Norwegian as the favourite on Thursday and give a prediction of success for Tiril Eckhoff in the Oberhof sprint.

Until last week, the Rennsteig was not exactly the preferred route for Tiril Eckhoff in the World Cup. But that has now completely changed, because the victory in the sprint and the subsequent triumph in the pursuit may create a love affair between the Norwegian and the World Cup course in Oberhof.

Women’s sprint on January 14th, 2021 in Oberhof – outsiders

We think that Julia Simon should have a slightly better chance of attacking the top trio. The tendency for the French woman is clearly positive. But we question whether that’s enough for a World Cup victory.

“Postponed is not cancelled.” – Denise Herrmann

Dorothea Wierer would certainly be a candidate who could fight for victory, but the Italian has not really gotten going this winter. But if she has a good day she can end up in the lead, which also applies to Dzinara Alimbekava. The Belarusian recently celebrated her first-ever World Cup victory in the Hochfilzen sprint.

German ladies below expectations

Franziska Preuß is in fourth place in the sprint ranking. The Germans apparently lack the running ability to land at the top. This should actually be available with her team colleague Denise Herrmann. However, she shoots far too many tickets for that. Nevertheless, the two best German biathletes have big plans for this week in Oberhof.

Prediction & betting base trend – who will win the women’s sprint in Oberhof on January 14th, 2021?

It is to be hoped that the German women will gain self-confidence at the home races in order to further advance the improvement in form towards the World Cup. However, we don’t expect a home win on Thursday. Either it doesn’t work at the shooting range, or the backlog on the trail is too great. The overall package is not right for any German woman at the moment.

But the Norwegians are in good shape. Marte Olsbu Roiseland and Tiril Eckhoff are the biggest favourites for us. As a five-time Antholz world champion, Olsbu Roiseland is currently also the leader in the overall World Cup. Tiril Eckhoff, however, has won five of the last eight races, including two sprints. The tendency could be to place bets on a Norwegian victory in the Oberhof sprint.

Key facts – Ladies’ sprint in Oberhof – tips

Tiril Eckhoff has won five of the last eight races in the World Cup.
Marte Olsbu Roiseland is the leader in the sprint and overall World Cup.
Hanna Öberg has already won two sprints this winter.

Hanna Öberg is probably the woman who is most likely to thwart the Norwegian women. After all, the Swede has already won two sprints this winter. But we think that it should amount to a Norwegian duel. In view of the quotations, it is even conceivable to play the betting odds of Eckhoff and Olsbu Roiseland with a smaller stake in the women’s sprint in Oberhof.
