Tiril Eckhoff and Hanna Öberg have each won two sprints this winter. Surprisingly, the fifth victory of the season over the short distance went to Belarusian Dzinara Alimbekava, who did not start well into the new year. In the women’s sprint in Oberhof, the prediction tends towards a Scandinavian victory.
In the German camp, one hopes that Franziska Preuss or Denise Herrmann will finally break the knot, especially with a view to the World Cup in Pokljuka next month. It is impressive what the five-time Antholz world champion is once again demonstrating in Constance this season. Tiril Eckhoff, for example, has significantly more World Cup victories this winter, but Marte Olsbu Roiseland leads the overall World Cup. This is because, apart from the season opener (individual) in Kontiolahti, she never finished worse than seventh in the last ten races.
Roiseland still without a sprint win this winter
At least it was enough for the Norwegian to win two times. Marte Olsbu Roiseland triumphed in the pursuit in Hochfilzen and in the mass start in the second week of Hochfilzen. Last weekend it was enough to finish fifth in the sprint on the Rennsteig. In the pursuit that followed, the 30-year-old missed victory by a hair’s breadth and came in second.
Almost exactly a year ago, Marte Olsbu Roiseland won a sprint on the Rennsteig. A top placement seems almost certain for the Norwegian on Thursday. Tiril Eckhoff has won five of the last eight races and also finished second twice. So she really got on her teammate Marte Olsbu Roiseland in the overall World Cup. However, we don’t expect a home win on Thursday. Either it doesn’t work at the shooting range, or the backlog on the trail is too great. The overall package is not right for any German woman at the moment.
But the Norwegians are in good shape. Marte Olsbu Roiseland and Tiril Eckhoff are the biggest favourites for us.
