After 13 years of dominance by BATE Borisov, Dinamo Brest was surprisingly able to secure the title last season. For President Diego Armando Maradona’s team, this was the greatest success in the club’s history. But at the end of April, these successful times seem to be a long time ago.

Successes are currently few and far between; after six match days, the defending champion is in the completely disappointing 13th place in the Belarusian league. The advantage over relegation place 14 is just two goals. Two wins, one draw and three losses are the weak results of new coach Sergey Kovalchuk.
In view of this development, the surprising separation from the Czech championship coach Marcel Licka (had to go after winning the title) is by no means understandable. Kovalchuk has been working at Dinamo Brest for almost a decade and a half in various functions (assistant coach, sports director, interim coach, …). Sooner or later, successes have to come, otherwise he will soon be rid of his head coaching post.
The trophy as a glimmer of hope
The Belarusian league has delivered some surprises in the first weeks of the new season. The gap to the top of the table is still manageable with only six points. The development is nevertheless worrying, after all there were two defeats in the end.
The cup competition is intended to remedy the situation and bring back self-confidence. After the first leg success, the chance for the fourth cup triumph in club history (most recently in 2018) is still intact. Even if the performances were not satisfactory recently and there was a defeat against Soligorsk at the weekend, we do not share the opinion of the bookmakers. The game is certainly not as clear as the odds between Shakhty Soligorsk and Dinamo Brest are.
