Midtjylland were left with a bitter taste of “what could have been” after their 1-1 draw with Sporting Lisbon in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League (UEL) play-off round. The Danish side succumbed to a 94th-minute equalizer after taking the lead in Portugal, meaning everything will be decided in this clash at the MCH Arena, where Midtjylland will be looking to win a two-legged elimination series against Portuguese opposition for the first time.

It’s easy to see why they are in this situation, as they boast just one win in nine games against their Portuguese counterparts (E2, P6), but if they can take one positive from that dismal record, it’s that that one win came in this very stadium last season, with a 3-2 victory over Braga. However, turning that record around looks a tall order in this second leg, as Midtjylland failed to win the second of their seven previous two-legged ties in European competition (E1, P6).

For their part, Sporting might be a bit worried about being the team against which Midtjylland will finally break their drought, given that they have won only one of their last 18 away games in the round of 16 in European competition (E8, P9). Sporting managed an away win on Monday against Chaves domestically (3-2), but will be aware that now with the Primeira Liga title out of reach, and the Champions League places also looking unattainable, UEL is a great opportunity to secure a return to UEFA’s premier club competition.

They have Sebastian Coates’ agonizing goal in the first leg, Sporting’s last in this competition outside of extra time, to thank for not needing to come from behind here to progress further in the tournament. Strangely, though, that draw may not be a great psychological result, given that Sporting has lost ten of its previous 12 ties in European competition in which it drew the first leg at home, including three with a 1-1 scoreline.

Players to watch: Emam Ashour scored in the first leg and could now become the first Midtjylland player since Pione Sisto in 2015/16 to score in both legs of a UEL tie. Young sensation Youssef Chermiti has scored two goals after the 80th minute since the start of February, both times as the last of the game.
Big Fact: There has been at least one first-half goal in Sporting’s last six away games in the UEL.
